Bomb Disposal Officer

Bomb Disposal Officer: Baby Bomb

1994

Director: Jamie Luk

Stars: Anthony Wong, Lau Ching-Wan

Wong and Lau are two happy-go-lucky bomb squad members whose lives get turned upside down after one of them (after a drunken late-night threesome) gets a woman pregnant. The two turn into competing "potential" fathers, alternating between refusing and loving the unborn child. Their "real" job starts to interfere when a loony known as the Crazy Bomber starts targeting them.

Bomb Disposal Officer is a good comedy, mostly due to the strong performances of the two leads. Both Wong and Lau -- both regularly tough guys -- are great as the slightly wimpy "experts". They have a nice on-screen chemistry that is simply infectious; unlike many HK comedies, the uninitiated viewer will get just as much out of the film as those who are well-versed in the art. Even though a lot of the jokes are badly translated, Wong and Lau convey so much through their expressions that most anyone will be rolling in laughter. That being said, Bomb Disposal Officer (like many HK movies) does switch gears a few times during its running time; those expecting a light-hearted comedy may be off-put by some of the more violent bits (which make up only a short part of the film).
