Even after almost seventeen years and 1600 movie reviews, there are some things that your friendly neighborhood reviewer just doesn't "get" when it comes to Hong Kong movies. Usually due to cultural or language differences, there are a number of releases that simply don't translate well to Western audiences. The character of Master Q would appear to be something that would side step this issue, but -- at least from the results showcased here -- unless you have an extremely high tolerance for loud humor, this is a film to stay away from.

Master Q (voiced here by Chapman To) and his sidekicks, including Potato (voiced by Eric Tsang) have been around since the early 1960's, starting in comics and then a series of films. Each time out, Master Q has a different job, which brings him along on a different adventure. Here, he's playing a pet detective (yes, like Ace Ventura -- this movie is not very subtle with its humor) who for some reason gets roped into saving a couple of annoying kids from the dangers of an evil online game.

When I say annoying, I mean annoying. As in "jab chopsticks into your ears to stop the pain" annoying. Eric Tsang's voice is pleasant compared to the literal screeching of these half pints, and that's saying a lot. Some of the humor is mildly amusing, but most of it is extremely out of date and stale: Matrix parodies and the like were tired a decade ago and are beaten into the ground now. Combined with characters that will have you reaching for the Advil, this cartoon is really anything but fun.
