The Master Swordsman Returns

Master Swordsman

To be honest, my score for this review is probably lower than it should be, but I really didn't have any idea of what the hell was going on here. Like some of Tai Seng's other releases, The Master Swordsman Returns is an edited version of a Hong Kong TV series. As such, a lot (and I mean a LOT) of the story has been taken out in favor of packing this version full of action sequences. The problem is that this is a TV series, which means it's shot on video and has a small budget. As such, the action looks very cheap and generally comes off as pretty unexciting.

I guess I just have a hard time thinking of who this DVD's audience is. Those interested in the original TV series will be put off by the haphazard editing (some scenes bleed over each other and look like they were put together with a butcher knife and scotch tape) and kung fu fans probably won't find much of interest here, since all of the fights come off as cookie-cutter clones of each other. And did I mention that there's aliens in here as well? Yep, and their costumes are so low budget, even the most die hard Star Trek fans will probably have to stifle their giggles. Tai Seng did a good job at condensing other TV series like Donnie Yen's Fist of Fury, but they really missed the boat on this one.
