Many horror movie fans (myself included) have been waiting for this match-up since the 80's. However, given the limp nature of recent slasher films like the idiotic Jason X, I really didn't have much hope for this. But Ronny Yu is a solid director -- he actually made an entertaining picture featuring a psychotic doll come to life with Bride of Chucky -- and he succeeds again here. Freddy Vs. Jason is a welcome return to a "real" slasher movie. The plot is silly, the acting is sub-par, but there's oodles of gratuitous sex and violence without the inane tongue-in-cheek "hip" attitude spooged forth by most recent entries into the genre like the Scream series.
The film has Freddy lamenting the fact that he can no longer haunt people's dreams since they have forgotten about him, so he brings back everyone's favorite camp counselor killer Jason to do some dirty work. So yeah, the plot isn't that dense, but in these types of movies, the plot is just an excuse to get to the good stuff. And there's lots of it here. In the first five minutes, we have three kills and some bare breasts, which is much better than most "horror" films lately, where the blood and boobs are set aside for "clever" comedy. Freddy Vs. Jason isn't really going to bring any new fans to the series, but for those who grew up with these types of films, it's a nice nostalgic ride.
