Random musings about Hong Kong movies part deux
The following are a series of short reviews of films (aka Tweets) that I watched during my stepson's treatment for cancer. I just wanted to get something up before my old man memory (or lack thereof) kicks in and I forgot everything about these movies.
All for the Gambler (1991)
Tries to be like the Stephen Chow movie the title is ripped off from and fails. RATING: 4 |
Armed Policewoman (1995)
Boring picture that's a waste of talent of everyone involved. Not even any good action. RATING: 3 |
Challenge (1997)
Yukari Oshima kills fabric suppliers. Good in that no-bullshit way low budget 90s HK stuff had. RATING: 7 |
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016)
Totally unnecessary and about a decade too late, which might be why no one invlved with this picture seems to give a damn. RATING: 4 |
Dangerous Duty (1996)
The one highlight featured here is Elvis Tsui taking aim with Robocop's gun at a slow motion running Diana Pang Dan. RATING: 3 |
Dreaming the Reality (1991)
Meanders about until the hour mark, but the action-packed finale will satisfy genre fans. RATING: 7 |
Girls Gang (1995)
Tepid "teens in trouble" melodrama with little of the shenanigans you might expect a Cat 3 rating. RATING: 4 |
Gold Rush (1999)
A couple of decent fights helmed by Yuen Bun won't save you fron rushing to hit the eject button. RATING: 3 |
Murders Made to Order (1993)
Yet another mid-90's girls with guns entry "inspired" by La Femme Nikita. A few decent action things liven things up. RATING: 5 |
Out Bound Killing (1994)
A solid cast and violent action livens up the tired mismatched HK and Mainland cop plot and silly title (yes, it's supposed to be Out Bound Killing). RATING: 6 |
Phantom War (1991)
An interesting premise of Vietnamese refugees dealing with gang violence in London is hampered by poor pacing and acting. RATING: 5 |
Shadow Cop (1993)
Decent action/comedy featuring the surprisingly popular subgenre of a cop who comes back as a ghost. RATING: 6 |
The Rebel Intruders (1980)
Delivers a lot of fights and bloodshed, but not much originality or passion. RATING: 6 |
Tiger Angels (1997)
Decent fight scenes can't save a lot of wasted potential with Yukari Oshima and Cynthia Khan. RATING: 5 |
Wicked Wife (1981)
What could be some sort of bizarrely schizophrenic charming kung fu/horror mash-up is let down by a glacial pace and extremely clumsy exposition. RATING: 4 |
